Bald spots in your lawn can be caused by a number of different issues. The problem could stem from:
- insect infestations
- heavy foot traffic
- lack of sunlight
- over fertilizing
- pet urine
Once you identify the root cause of your balding issues, you can then begin repairing your lawn.
Steps to Removing Bald Spot in Lawn
Step 1: Order Topsoil
The type of soil to use when seeding bald areas of your lawn makes a difference. Here at Brinkmann’s, we suggest homeowners use shredded topsoil. Our shredded topsoil is pulverized and has the majority of stones and debris removed. No additional work is needed. Our shredded topsoil also is mixed with 20-30% organic compost. The organic compost infuses nutrients into the soil to promote healthy growth.
Step 2: Rake New Loose Topsoil
If your ground soil is hard and brittle, rake the existing shredded topsoil to break it up first. Then generously spread the new loose topsoil until the clumps of dirt have been broken down.
Step 3: Seed the Area
Lay a thick and even layer of seed on the area; and gently rake the seeds into the topsoil. At Brinkmann’s, we use a grass seed deluxe mixture comprised of one-third perennial rye, one-third fescue, and one-third blue. This mixture is great for seeding home lawns during the warm season. It creates a premium green turf.
Step 4: Cover the Area with Hay
Cover the newly seeded area with hay. This will allow the soil to hold its moisture and prevent birds from eating the seeds. It will also minimize washouts from rain and retain heat.
At Brinkmann’s, we offer homeowners a grass cover hay. It is great for covering seeded areas.
Step 5: Water the Newly Seeded Area
The newly soiled area should be watered every other day for at least 2 weeks or as needed. This will keep the soil moist, allowing the seeds to germinate. Do not mow the area until the grass is 4” tall. When mowing, set your mower deck high the first two times you mow your lawn.
Also, reduce foot traffic to prevent the seeds from not growing.
